Q1. After submitting my application online, when can I get my new international driving permit?
If your application details and payment are in order, Transport Department will send the new international driving permit to your correspondence address by registered mail within ten working days.
Q2. If an applicant wishes to use online system to apply for international driving permit, what are the identity authentication methods that he/she can use?
If an applicant wishes to apply for international driving permit through online system, he/she should have -
  1. an "iAM Smart+" account with digital signing function; or
  2. a valid personal digital certificate issued by the recognised Certification Authorities (e.g. the Hong Kong Post) for identity authentication purpose.
Q3. Does it mean that an applicant can use online system for international driving permit immediately after completing the registration process of "iAM Smart" account?
Applicant should have an "iAM Smart+" account with digital signing function in order to use online system for international driving permit.
Applicant can use/visit "iAM Smart" self-service kiosk, service counters or registration team to create "iAM Smart" account with digital signing function.

If applicants encounter any problems or difficulties in the registration process of "iAM Smart+" account or using "iAM Smart+" mobile application, please call "iAM Smart" Hotline at (852) 182 123 or send email to enquiry@iamsmart.gov.hk.
Applicants can also visit "iAM Smart" website https://www.iamsmart.gov.hk/en/index.html to obtain the related information.
Q5. I have just moved to a new address. Can I update my address in Transport Department when I submit my online application for international driving permit?
Yes, you can change your current residential and/or correspondence address when you fill in your application for international driving permit online. All vehicle and driving licence records under the same identity document number held by Transport Department will be updated to the new address (es) reported.
Q6. What can I do if I am not sure whether my application is successfully submitted online or not?
If your application details and payment are in order, the new licence will be posted to you by registered mail within ten working days. If you do not receive your licence then, you may contact 1823 Call Centre.
When your application is being processed, Transport Department may have to contact you. To make sure that you could be reached during office hours, please provide us your daytime contact telephone number.
Q7. How can I pay the application fee?
For online payment, you can choose to pay by credit card (Visa, MasterCard, JCB or UnionPay), FPS or PPS. Please note PPS does not support payment via browsers of mobile devices (including mobile phones and tablets) at the moment. If you wish to pay by PPS, please change to use desktop computer. The acceptable format for the photograph is as follows:
  • Image type: JPG or JPEG
  • Image size: 10MB or below
  • Photograph size and requirements: new and recent photographs with plain background, size 40mm (W) x 50mm (L) taken full face without headwear
  • Image resolution: 600 dpi
The acceptable format for the address proof is as follows:
  • Image type: JPG, JPEG, PDF
  • Image size: 5MB or below (JPG, JPEG); 1MB or below (PDF)
  • Image resolution: 600 dpi
* The applicant may be required to provide the supporting document again if the contents of the uploaded image cannot be clearly read by Transport Department.
Q14. Can I use my mobile device to submit my application for international driving permit online?
You can submit online application for international driving permit through browsers of mobile devices.
Q15. Will online application for international driving permit work well on any mobile device?
You can use mobile devices running iOS and Andriod operating systems and common browsers. For other operating systems and browsers, they may not support all the functions of online application for international driving permit completely. If you encounter compatibility problems, please change to use a desktop or notebook computer.
Q16. Why do the "Print" and "Save" buttons not work on my mobile device?
The "Print" and "Save" buttons are tailor-made for desktop and notebook computers.
Q17. Who is eligible for applying for an international driving permit?
Applicant applying for an international driving permit should be a holder of Hong Kong Identity Card and a full Hong Kong driving licence which is still valid, or has not expired for more than 3 years. The applicant should not be at present disqualified from holding or driving the class(es) of vehicle for which he/she wishes to apply.
